Planning for Success in Uncertain Times: Tips from an OBM

by | Feb 7, 2024 | General, OBM, Planning

In the ever-changing landscape of business (and life in general), planning ahead is not just a good idea, it’s essential for sustainable growth. As we move further into a new year filled with possibilities, uncertainties and challenges, it’s natural to feel a bit apprehensive, especially considering the uncertainties that we’ve all faced, locally and globally, in the last few years.

But fear not! With the right strategies in place, you can navigate the unpredictable and come out the other side stronger than ever.

The secret? A clear plan.

A clear plan is key to sustainable growth in a business. It keeps us focused. It builds momentum.

Here are some practical tips to help you plan for success, even in the face of uncertainty:

Embrace Flexibility in Goal Setting

Setting clear goals and objectives is the cornerstone of any successful business plan. However, in times of uncertainty, it’s crucial to remain flexible with your timelines and expectations. While it’s important to have specific targets laid out, leave room for adjustments and revisions as needed. As an experienced OBM, I understand the importance of adapting to changing circumstances and can help you navigate these shifts while staying on track towards your goals. I’m a big fan of quarterly planning – setting out the specifics of the next 90 days but also planning to be able to move around timelines for the year if need be.

Prepare Multiple Contingency Plans

In today’s business environment, what worked yesterday may not work tomorrow. Things move fast in the online world. That’s why it’s essential to have backup plans in place. Consider developing alternative strategies (Plan B, Plan C, and even Plan D) to pivot quickly if your initial approach proves ineffective. Whether it’s adjusting marketing tactics or exploring new revenue streams, having multiple contingency plans can help safeguard your business against unforeseen challenges.

Practice Self-Compassion and Wellness

While striving for growth is admirable, it’s equally important to prioritise self-care and well-being. As entrepreneurs and business owners, we often push ourselves to (and often beyond!) the limit in pursuit of success. However, it’s essential to recognise when we need to take a step back and recharge. If you’re feeling exhausted or overwhelmed, consider taking a more balanced approach to your goals. Remember, sustainable success requires a healthy mind, body, and spirit. If you’re feeling overwhelmed and exhausted at this stage in the game, maybe now is not the right time to be making big plans. Maybe this should be the year of consistency and recuperation.
